CT Man Who Stabbed Himself When Confronted By Cops Was Wanted For Kidnapping

David O’Brien, age 30, of Haddam, was captured by Hartford Police on Tuesday, Feb. 2, in connection with the event which took place in Farmington on Friday, Jan. 29, said Farmington Police Lieutenant Tim McKenzie.

The 54-year-old victim from Cheshire was seriously injured when O’Brien, 30, and Lauren Murphy, 31, also of Haddam, tried to kidnap her in the Red Cross parking lot where she works because they needed her to access her bank account in order to buy drugs, McKenzie said.

The entire incident began on Thursday, Jan. 28, when O'Brien and Murphy broke into the victim's home and stole her purse and car keys, McKenzie said.

On Friday, in order to use the victim's stolen debit cards, they attempted to get her in the vehicle, but she slipped and fell under the rear wheels of the vehicle and was seriously injured, McKenzie said.

The duo, who knew the victim before the crimes, fled and were caught days later in Hartford where O'Brien stabbed himself.

McKenzie said Murphy was captured by Hartford Police and has been charged with attempted kidnapping, robbery, and unlawful restraint. She was being held on a $450,000 bond. 

O'Brien, who is in stable but critical condition, is being guarded by Farmington Police. 

He was charged with kidnapping, robbery, assault, evading responsibility with a serious injury, and unlawful restraint. He is being held on a $500,000 bond. 

The victim is in serious condition in the hospital.
